Tee Junction - Straight Loss
Question:
When we model a tee junction, if we turn off the branch pipe, should we have a pressure loss for the straight pipe, ie a straight loss?
Answer:
According to Idelchik, Miller and SAE, the straight losses in the case of the branch connection being turned off is zero. However, for Crane type tees there should be a loss.
The image below shows a test exercise for the exact same model only using the four different tee pressure loss relationships.
As we can see, the Crane method produces a pressure loss for the straight whereas all other methods have a zero results as per the literature.

WASC Slurry Pressure Loss Correlation
In general, the WASC correlation is the only method which considers vertical pipes, i.e. different equations are used for pipe inclinations above 30 degrees. Above 80 degrees, the solution assumes a vertical pipe. The WASC method uses only the d50 ...

Idelchik Tees
FluidFlow calculates the K Straight and K Branch values for Idelchik tees as follows: Kb = Kt / (Vb / Vch)2 Kst = Kt / (Vst / Vch)2 Let’s consider the QA Example as follows: Kb = Kt / (Vb / Vch)2 (Vb / Vch)2 = (3.141 / 6.131)2 = 0.262466. Branch K = ...
Sprinkler Pressures
In sprinkler literature, all pressure losses are defined as total (stagnation) pressure loss. A sprinkler K represents a total pressure loss. FluidFlow uses total pressures and total pressure losses which means the we should be using stagnation ...
