Valves

A valve is a device that regulates, directs, and controls the flow of fluids by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Manually (or remotely) operated valves are typically used in on/off duties. Sometimes a valve can be used in a throttling duty. FluidFlow allows both types of operation to be analysed.

Note: In FluidFlow, valves can be used on a throttling duty if the curve data (Cv vs. %open, K vs. %open, Kf vs. % open, etc.) is defined for the valve in the database.

There are many different types of manually (or remotely) operated valves. FluidFlow contains data for the following types: Butterfly; Diaphragm; Ball; Gate; Globe; Angle; Ball Float; Plug; Pinch; Y-Globe; Needle; Slide; Penstock and Fire Hydrant. All of these types have 2 connections an inlet and an outlet. In addition, FluidFlow also contains data for the three-way valves.

The table below shows the application of different valve components available in the FluidFlow database:

The table below shows the required data input and the output for the valve components. Note that the results table varies depending upon the fluid phase state and the visible properties selected by the user.

Size Change Size change components bring about a sudden change in velocity at the component. This can be caused by a change in the size of inlet and outlet pipes or by a sudden constriction. In FluidFlow, the thin sharp-edged orifice, thick orifice, ...
